Measure it to find out how long your own piece of string is. A piece is a piece is a piece.
No such thing as half a piece, unless a restaurant cuts pies into servings, then if you say half a piece, you mean half of their pre-cut portion. That's really a slice, too, but lots of people call it a piece. A slice is still a piece. Otherwise, a piece is a piece is a piece.
If it's long enough, some people call that a "length" of string.
BTW, I didn't give the thumbs down to the person who said something about half a piece.
ADDED:
FIDGETY: Are you an actuary? I almost said the same thing!
ADDED MORE, Definition of PIECE:
A part of a whole,
A standard quantity (as of length, weight, or size) in which something is made or sold

Fold the string so both ends touch, and stretch it as taut as you can.
Then measure it. It is twice as long as from the middle to the ends.
You appear to need a hobby.

How big is a "piece" of pie on a chart. A PIECE...will always be...a piece...regardless of size. As long as it's less than the original whole.
