My internet company has a wireless plan that costs money each month, but I don't want to do that if I only need to buy a wireless router to do it myself. I have cable internet, if it helps.

Yes you could replace the router and buy the wireless router. Then you would need to set it up.

In addition to the wireless router, and the setup involved, you'll also need a wireless network adapter on your computer. Note that the wireless router has a limited range, so don't expect to use your net connection if you are going far from your house.

If you want your computer to be wireless you'll need to purchase a wireless router which will plug into your high speed cable modem. If you have a desktop you'll also need to purchase a wireless card for that computer. You can usually get one external that plugs into a USB port. If you have a notebook, hopefully, you'll have an internal wireless card. If not you'll have to purchase a card for that as well. You're pretty much good to go from there.

Also see if your phone can be used as a modem too. Check with your phone company. That is what I did.

A wireless router will make you able to move your computer around with out having to extend wires or replugging in. But you can do it yourself. Go to pcworld.com or cnet.com for info on this and what type of router to buy.

It sounds like you would be logging on to the company's wireless signal. If that's the case, you would need a wireless adapter card for your computer. It will need to handle an encrypted signal.
