can you please simplify the meaning of this sentence in a way it can be understood???

"British recalcitrance about Indian independence evaporated after the war, however."

What's wrong with the sentence as written? It is a perfectly good sentence, properly constructed and composed. The word 'recalcitrance' may not be known to all, but is that a reason to dumb down writing? To those who do not understand a word, there's a marvelous development available. It's called a DICTIONARY.
