recalcitrance= to resist oppose, show strong objection or repugnance. Evaporate= to disappear

I think:"Before the war,British didn't want Indians to be independent ,but after they didn't care."

what's incorrect with the sentence as written? that's a superbly sturdy sentence, actual built and composed. The be conscious 'recalcitrance' won't be conventional to all, yet is that a reason to dumb down writing? to those that don't understand a be conscious, there's a dazzling progression attainable. it is talked approximately as a DICTIONARY.
