Though laws vary by state, it is usually against the law to videotape someone with sound; a videotape with no sound is typically legal. I have no idea why they make that distinction, but it seems to be common. Most video surveillance of course does not have sound.

Check with your local law enforcement agency. Ask them IF it would be legal, if you did it; don't ask them if the tape you made is legal!

NO. My friend is in IL. She put a recorder under her shirt and is filing a lawsuit against her boss. He even hit her.

Usually, if you are a party to the conversation, you can record. But don't worry too much about this - chances are a lawyer will try to get it thrown out in Court - but your lawyer will simply fight and succeed.
