If it hasn't been painted over, most artex will steam off with a wallpaper steamer. This minimises dust too.

Like one answerer alluded to: Some older Artex contains asbestos! If you're not sure how old it is, or where the artex came from, then the safest course of action is to assume it HAS got asbestos in it and treat it accordingly.

If you're feeling brave, (or maybe you're near the end of your life already), then just get some good overalls and a decent respirator. Don't just use those useless dust masks they're awful and they don't work. You need at least a half face respirator.

The proper way is to get a specialist in to do it properly, but this is very expensive, (but what price your health?).

Good luck.
Cheers.

sAs everyone else has highlighted pre 1982 Artex contains asbestos, trying to remove artex via all the mean mentioned is horrendous, generally artex at it worst protrudes 20mm. The easiest way and most economical to treat artex is to over skim the artex with plaster, depending on the size of the wall or ceiling in most cases can be completed with less mess than you think and normally (depending on size) would take a day to complete or less.

Hope this helps?

Cheers Steve

Don't remove it as Artex may contain asbestos and it is extremely unwise to sand down or scrape without seeking the advice of an asbestos specialist. Contact your local council for help with this.

Sorry but its mission impossible without causing an horrendous dust mountain, I worked in a tool hire shop for years and ppl kept asking for a wallpaper stripper to try and steam it off, trust me it dosen't work.
The best solution is to get a plasterer in and skim your walls,
good luck

The simplest way is to cover with a mesh and reskim with plaster. To remove is a nightmare and you have you have to virtually rebuild the damage caused by removal.

1. Set fire to the house.
2. Claim on the insurance.
3. Buy a new house!

Usually with a hammer & chisel. If you're lucky it'll break off in big pieces.
