Itunes is completely legal, and each song cost 99 cents. If you don't want to pay for downloading songs, you can use limewire. The excuse used by the creators of limewire is that they are "sharing" the files, but everyone knows it is illegal. Just disconnect from limewire as soon as you finish downloading and you should do fine.

Only downloading copyrighted material is illegal, but most people still do it anyway. There are some sites or programs that you pay a bit of money for a song or movie but if there are 14 songs on a cd and to download (by paying about a pound or more) all those songs, it ends up being more expensive than buying the cd.

I use limewire but only for a few songs. I have tried to get movies but recent ones are usually filmed in cinemas or are in other languages. But dont download thousands although my friend did and he gave them to me so technically i didnt do anything wrong - so u could get someone else to download it and then get it from them. That way u dont get in trouble.
I think people download "illegally" coz its much cheaper and who wants to pay when u can get something for free??

as long as you do not try to profit off of downloaded material, currently it should be legal. so dont sell cds that u burn from downloaded material. but if u want to put it on ur mp3 player only, download limewire and use that. But when you search for a song, the best way to download a safe file would be to search exactly for "(track number) (song name)". So an example would be "04 Do It Alone" (from Sugarcult). This is safe because when itunes or windows media player rip songs from cds, they label the songs in that manner, track number and song name. Hope that's not too confusing...

You can buy those prepaid cards from music stores which give you a code to get songs online. Those are perfectly legal. Or, you can pay for monthly or annual membership on a legal site such as Yahoo! Music to get unlimited downloads. These methods are all perfectly legal and the artist will get the same amount of royalties as if you bought the CD.

You cannot legally download material that is for sale and protected by copyright without paying for the right to do that. You can download material that is protected by copyright if the copyright holder has given you permission. You can access free MP3 files and streaming music from the Live Music Archive ( http://www.archive.org/browse.php?collection=etree&field=%2Fmetadata%2Fcreator ), or you can go to the trouble of recording streaming radio with a recording utility (I use LPRecorder, but Audacity works also, and it is free) which you'll then have to convert to MP3 so you can transfer it to your player. Musicmatch (http://www.musicmatch.com ) will stream CD quality music to your comp tailored to your tastes, and convert your .WAV files to .MP3. Audacity will convert .WAV to .MP3 if you have the necessary plug in (called the LAME encoder, I believe.)

That is a two sided question. On one side downloading copyrighted material without paying for it IS illegal. However file sharing non protected songs, such as with limewire, is still legal. You can also upload songs to your computer from cds and sync them to your ipod via itunes.

Lol downloading songs is not illegal. only if you download it for free from eg. LimeWire! but others such as apple's iTunes is legal, you can download songs from hmv. Also you can put songs on your mp3 player from your cd collection.

It's not the downloading that's illegal. It's when file shariing programs like limewire allow others to get into your files and take what you've downloaded to your system. That would be illegal distribution of copyrighted material on your part.
If you want to download something, get what you want and then uninstall the program from your system.

Basically all the CD'S you have you import to your computer and then transfer to your mp3 player.

If you want to use a website you can use itunes (but you have to pay).

Websites like http://www.mp3fusion.net are used a lot but are not completely safe, so beware. I've only used it a few times.
