Yes it is. My father doesn't know how to spell. People who can't spell are a product of their upbringing. My father lived in poverty, but at the time he retired, was making almost 6 figures. He still doesn't know how to spell.

Alas, poor spelling is rife.
The only way to counterbalance it is to check the spelling abilities of potential employees. Only those who can spell get the job - if good spelling is necessary for the job.
It's amazing how many people who work in real estate offices are shocking spellers. Look in the windows of a real estate agent and see things like "dinning room" "not to small" "hear it is" "grate views", etc. It's an epidemic!

I know adults who are good people, with good jobs who struggle with spelling. My one teacher struggles. She has trouble with spelling some words. Not easy ones like comfortable and choose, but harder things. I also know people who have ran their own businesses who have trouble spelling.
Sometimes it is just not a person's strength. They shouldn't be treated as less, or have worse jobs. If you had trouble with math, would you want people making fun of you, saying you should work at McDonald's? Probably not.

Obviously she shouldn't have that job. Tell her that spelling is not one of the requirements for McDonald's. Maybe she should put in an application there.

I don't think it is wrong to expect it, but it is wrong to judge those who can't. There could be any number of reasons why. Instead of being upset by what they can't do, be thankful for what you can do.
