Some horror movies that scared the crap out of me: "Event Horizon," "Dawn of the Dead," "An American Haunting," "Gothika," the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre that just came out
Some good funny movies: "Airplane," "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," "Fun with Dick and Jane," "Out Cold"
Or just go for both and get "Evil Dead II" and "Army of Darkness," which are hilarious and creepy at the same time (especially ED II). Plus they're both cult classics.

Horror:
The Wicker man (original version with Christopher Lee and Edward Woodwood) - like no other Horror film ever.
Suspiria (by Italian master Dario Argento - superb film making)
Texas Chainsaw massacre (original version by Tobe Hooper only).
Five Dolls for an August moon (a great mixture of Horror/Mystery and comedy by Mario Bava)
Zombi aka Zombi 2 aka Zombie Flesh Eaters (worth it for the shark Vs Zombie scene alone).
Comedy:
King Pin (very funny)
The Party (Peter Sellers is always a laugh)
Any of the Doris Day and Rock Hudson films - LOVE THEM!
have fun
