People read to learn things, get information, to better understand other people or cultures. People read for enjoyment, to relax, to keep from being bored, or sometimes to help themselves fall asleep.
I myself read to get away from the world. When I read, I can forget, at least for a little while, about work, money and bills, the bad day I had, the people who irritate me, and all the things I should be doing instead of reading. lol I love to lose myself in a good book. Go to another world. Meet new people. Have adventures. Do things that, realistically, I could never do. I almost always have a book-in-progress. About the only time I don't, is when I've just finished one, and can't decide what to start next!

Reading is important to me because it takes me to so many places and time periods that I would never be able to see myself and lets me experience adventures I'd never have. I mostly read for entertainment and pleasure, so it seems I'm always somewhere on an adventure. I think that people should read because it is important to know how great a book can be, or how much better a book is than a movie. I just love books! And I wish that more kids in the younger generation would read but I can't make them do that.

Reading is important to me because it is an hobby, entertainment, a break from life's stresses, a chance to explore other worlds without traveling, (it has inspired me to visit certain locations because of reading about them in a book). You grow with each book, it helps develop your vocabulary, comprehension and makes you a more well rounded person. I have read books from different time periods, about people going through struggles I only heard about in history and it gives me a since of understanding where they are coming from. I have a greater respect for different cultures after reading book about them. Yes, I may never really know what it is like being Native American or Black, or Asian but I can have respect for them as a human being because despite our differences we all have feelings and emotions and that makes us human.
As for why others read I am sure it is a mixture of things, from necessity for school or job or entertainment.

It is the only efficient way to gather knowledge, which is more important today, than ever before.
My nephew's life changed, after his father got him to read by paying him $5.00/hr to read (checking the text and asking him questions to be sure he didn't cheat).
For $500.00 (took 100 hours before he liked reading so much, he kept it up on his own afterwards), his school grades made a 180 degree turn, and he got a degree in English. He is now in Japan teaching English.
A speech he gave in college about this, is being shown on video to all the students at that school.

Reading is important to me personally (as you have asked in your question) firstly because of knowledge. I think this would also be the reason why people read.

Secondly, i would say because it's interesting and fun and also it could be a form of escapism whereby i leave this world of trouble and stress, i enter the world of the book and explore it. Though it may not seem as real as our physical world but then again, it's just enjoyable to experience this other world and in this world no one can ever kill you!

I read to educate myself. I read to learn about countries I have not visited. I read to entertain myself. I read to challenge myself. I read to exercise my brain. I read because because it is one the things I most enjoy doing.
