A lover becomes a wife and the same (lover turned wife) remains the only lover, in a successful marriage.
In a troubled marriage, chances are that lover turned wife wont be a lover always, but a new lover takes the place of wife even though she remains a wife. the emotions and the passions inclines to the new found lover.
The love gets divided between lover and wife.

In terms of love and fidelity both are demanding and it is required to of you to be bountiful. But when it comes to producing offspring, you are pinned down, as this would entail legitimacy, which is to be given by wife only. With wife the foundation of a family life is laid down, with your lover you don’t have that choice. With love you have less of commitment, involvement and duties other than enjoying reciprocated love. Lover can be let off rather easily whereas wife would demand alimony.

generally speaking, a lover is a person you are not publicly and officially engaged to (like marriage in church) but you make out with whereas a wife is someone who you have vowed to spend the rest of your life with in front of men and in front of God (blessed by the priest/rabbi etc), in sickness and in health till death do you part.
A lover could and has the right to walk out on you even for a petty argument while with a wife, you try to do your best so as to keep the sacred vow you made in the first place.

Lover sounds more passionate, more involved. But I believe for a marriage to be really successful, you should find a way for your wife to remain a lover, and you to her.
