Draw what speaks to you! Hehehe....Just kidding.
It is sorta true though. You can pick anything from scenery, nature, still-life, portraits, abstract, scribble for all anyone cares.
Just that you draw better when you draw something you like.
If you tell me to draw a square, its simple right...but if I don't want to draw a square, I want to draw a circle, the square will come out awful and my circle much better....do you see my example?
Draw what you like.
I like flowers and cartoon characters...so that's what I draw.

Here is an answer. Assuming you wish to enlarge drawing skills, and this is not just a school assignment, (although it could be,) A still life set up might just be just the ticket. It needn't be elaborate, best it is left simple. Use a single light source, entering the picture plane at about 45o. Use about 3 objects. Say a tubular vase, a branch, and a piece of fruit. Arrange this so you clearly understand the action of light on these things and go to work to make your hand understand what your eye sees. Then your drawing, you will be doing formal problems like this all your artistic life. Might as well get started now.

I always liked drawing normal scenes and putting a twist on it. Like this one piece I did was a library at night, everything normal except a few books were floating around. Another example is a piece I did in a deserted hotel hallway, with corridors leading off in all directions, and then I threw in a hallway that seemed to go on forever, but that couldn't really exist because other hallways would have intersected it. If you like that idea, just think of the most boring setting you can think of and throw something strange, weird, or even creepy in there. Enjoy!

Well, I don't know you, so I really couldn't tell you what you should do because I don't know what you are capable of. I, however, would create an origional peice in the style of one of my favorite artists (for me, personally, that would be Salvador Dali [surrealism] or Andy Worhol [pop art]).

I find trees fascinating... they are perfect in their imperfection and lack of symmetry... give that a try! Good Luck.
