Back tailgate seal worn, damaged or has been removed and wrongly refitted/
Rear screen leaking, it should be a dry seal, check that the w/s rubber is correctly fitted.
Rear light cluster water penetrating between the light unit and body.
Rust inside car or hastch area, remove carpets to check.
Way to test is use a hose around suspected area but start from lowest position first other wise if you start pouring water from roof and it leaks, u wont find where its comming from unless ur lucky. Be carefull if u use a hose in this weather as u could cause an ice rink and if anyone gets hurt as a result then ur in trouble.
Check the door seals as well
Re the rear hatch seal, what DIY people tend to do is start fitting the rear seal from top middle down, this leaves a smal gap in the seal which lets water penetrate.
Another thing is, if your battery is situated on the N/s of the car and tucked slightly under the scuttle panel where wipers are, on old mk 3 escorts they were notorious for battery acid and water rusting the battery support plate leaving a huge hole on the firewall. Open your bonnet and then ur n/s front door and look right under the dash and if u see daylight comming from the engine compartment there is your prob, but if ur front N/s footwell is ok then its the rear end. Where is ur car ariel? on rear of roof then check it as well.
Silly me asking u to look under dash as u only do that if front foot well is wet and when I say wet I mean u could sail a yacht in it, its that deep.

Ok if this is what happened to my Escort then it is very nasty but easy to fix. Have a look between the bonnet and the windscreen, lift the panel there. This is where the vents to the internal of the car are, if it is an old car then there is a lip around the air intake that can rust and then allow water to go down through your vent trunking into your car. This has happened to two of my previous cars. I sorted it out by repairing this and never had any further problems.

the heater matrix is probably gone, its in the plastic box right at the back on the floor in the centre of the dashboard. get down and have a look there are clips holding it in if there is water around it then thats your problem, if you want to attempt to change its fiddly but not a major job, unlcip the clips take off both the water pipes and replace the unit, if you get a secondhand one blow into it when sealing the other pipe if it leaks walk away! they are around 20 pounds from scrappies a bit less on ebay. a garage wil probably charge you about 60 quid to fit if you supplied the part.

Get a new door seal. Old ones can stretch, and get cracked & let in the rain, which runs down and pools in the carpet. Just take off the old baggy seal and fit the new tight one! Should solve the problem.

the battery tray has a tendency to rot the best way to find out where the leak is from is to use a hose pipe and look for the point of water ingress

you might not see the hole from the inside but go further up the firewall to the heater box if not there i wound start checking around the wind shield it rusted out there on my 87 ranger .you might suspect this if you hear wind noise.
