There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is "UP."

It is easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?
Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?
I found this very interesting.
Are there other UP situations you can add,or comments?

One of the stranger uses of the word "up" that I can think of is when something is described as being "on the up and up", meaning it's legitimate or legal.

This is very interesting! Here's a few I thought of right away.

Telling people to "listen UP"
Telling someone to "shut UP"
"putting UP" as in canning.
or "putting UP" with something. Example, "I won't put Up with that kind of behavior."
"Looking UP" as in looking up a word in the dictionary.

Just a few here, I'm sure others will think of many more!

we wake up, and we catch up on our sleep.
Topics come up, and we will put them up for discussion.
We speak up only to be told to shut up
Officers come up for election, but it is up to us to vote them in.
The secretary will write up that report, and the Kinko's will print it up.

Some ups are superfluous (we wake, Kinko's will print it) but alot are needed. I wouldn't want to do 50 push's as part of my excercise regimen.

We noticed that my 18 month old knows to say "up" both when she wants to be picked up and when we are sitting down and she wants us to stand up.
