French Polish is a technique where you apply a mixture of Shellac and Parrafin oil to wood using a pad made of cotton rags. You first fold one rag into a tight square bundle then you wrap it with another rag. You dip this into the shellac oil mix then start applying it in a circular motion. When it starts to get sticky you add a little more pure parrafin oil to the pad and continue rubbing. After it is allowed to dry for a while you rub it out with a slurry of pumice and parrafin oil, or for even better results you can use Car Polish. The trick is to use a super fine abrasive that will leave a very smooth surface. There is more than just my brief description involved in producing a true french polish, so if you want to do it right I would reccomend the Taunton Press book "finishing", it contains all the information that you will need.

Touch-padding can restore this finish. The french method is one of rhythem and pressure. Take a high quality cotton cloth(no loose fibers) about 12in.X12in. and carefully wet it with alcohol from the center As you fold it up into a barelly moist pad. This pad must be surely gripped,so as not to allow deformation to take place, as you begin quick, short wipes of the surface. This touch and go action akin to wiping a skin burn redestributes the shellac with a new luster. A thousand hits on a 1ftX1ft surface is not unordinary. A correctly moistened pad must be maintained!
