WASHINGTON (AP) - Gov. Bill Richardson, D-N.M., said Sunday he is taking the first step toward an expected White House run in 2008, offering extensive experience in Washington and the world stage as he seeks to become the first Hispanic president.

"I am taking this step because we have to repair the damage that's been done to our country over the last six years," said Richardson, a former congressman, U.N. ambassador and Energy Department secretary.

"Our reputation in the world is diminished, our economy has languished, and civility and common decency in government has perished," he said in a statement.

He said he had set up an exploratory committee that will allow him to begin raising money and assembling his campaign organization.

"The governor is in it to run for president," spokesman Pahl Shipley said. The formal announcement will come in March after the end of New Mexico's legislative session, he said.

I don't think he'll win. Mainly because I've never heard of him before and the fact that he's Hispanic. He'd probably open the southern border to all who wants to come into this country. I think it's between Mitt Romney, Mr. Hillary Clinton, or Buttock Obama.

May not win the nomination, but it would prevent Hillary from getting a shoe in to Nomination. Hillary will have problem in the smaller interoir states outside the glizty areas because of her lack of understand local isusses, like water, ranching, mining. Richardson could factor in which Hillary could lose the nomination because Richardson could win some smaller interior states, as with Edwards too those groups would lobby against Hillary as a front runner because they be afriad to lose the election, but its too early to Tell. Ex-Govenors are better suited for Presidency than are senators.

Unfortunately, even in politics, Americans are celebrity-driven in their choices. Bill Richardson isn't Arnold Schwarzenegger. Most people don't know who the Governor of New Mexico is. Many don't even know who the government of their own state is, unless he or she gets a lot of air time on Fox News.

If you are for him, maybe. Seriously, a beltway outsider with executive branch experience would describe 4 of the last 5 presidents.

As Energy Secretary, he let nuclear secrets slip into Chinese hands. With that hanging around his neck I don't see him gaining any ground on his opponents.
