First of all clean the fridge inside properly, roll up a piece of kitchen paper & push it down into vent. Then pull the fridge/freezer away from the wall and have a look behind, you might find that there is a little plastic tray behind the fridge part which collects small amounts of liquid. This is affected by the heat from the back, and over time the liquid evaporates, leaving a yellow scum which smells like rotten eggs. It can be taken off and cleaned out, which should stop the whiff.

There is a product called FRIDGE IT that is really great and works better than anything else I've tried including baking soda. It is a little purple cube with a carbon filter inside that will get rid of any odor in fridge. I've used it for years now and recommend to everyone. Put one in fridge and one in freezer. While you're at it, you can use these everywhere. I've used in all over including under sinks and have friends that use it even near diaper pail. It really works. You can get it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. Definitely worth trying.

Check your fridge for strong onions. If you find a strong onion in your fridge, wrap it in cling film and throw it in the bin.
I can't think of anything which gives off the smell of strong onions except a strong onion.
Good luck.

Maybe someone murdered an onion seller, chopped them up and put them in the freezer.
