Hi,

I created a .reg file in notepad. However, when I try to execute it, it just opens notepad instead of prompting me to import the file into the registry. I set the file type as all types.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks!

When I checked, I have everything like you said it should be. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

I see that it says Notepad for .reg files right now. However, when I click to choose a different program to handle .reg files, the registry editor is not listed.

Could to tell me where I can find this program on my hard drive?

Thanks!

Open "My Computer"
Select Tools
Select Folder Options
Select File Types
Look for RED in the Extensions column and select it
Click Change and look for Registry Editor and select it
Click OK
Click OK

That should bond the .REG extension to Regeditor

You did make sure it's named .reg? Sometimes when you save it Notepad, it can save it as .reg.txt which still shows the .txt at the end. To prevent that, save file as "something.reg" , with the quotation marks. THe quotation marks means literally save it with the name inside the quotations, and dont append the .txt to the end like it sometimes does. But you sound smart, and I dont think this is your issue. It sounds like you did the Right click them, choose Program to open the .reg file and maybe checked the box "Always use this program" when you chose Notepad. Now it just opens notepad, right?

Try this, click start, run, regedt32
Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Then Software, then Microsoft, then Windows, then Current Version, then Extensions.

You might see something like this:
.txt REG_SZ: notepad.exe ^.txt

But if you see this:
.reg REG_SZ: notepad.exe ^.reg

then delete that line.

If no luck on that key, then goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Scroll down till you find .reg

The main key will simply say: : REG_SZ regfile.
But there should be a subfolder under the .reg folder, called PersistentHandler.
Make sure this key exists:
: REG_SZ: {5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

The above line will probably be shortened by Yahoo, just hover your mouse over the shortened line to see it in a bubble.

Good luck
