I had to watch the movie for my morality class and my teacher did not show the last 5 minutes because of a rape scene. So what happens in the end of the movie? I am mopst truly confused.

What you missed was a flashback/memory of the actual crime that was commited. It's actually kind of important for you to picture how horrific the act was in order to decide for yourself whether or not you believe the death penalty is justice or excessive punshment. But I have to say that the scene was disturbing and don't recommend you watch it without parental permission.

Sister Helen (Susan Sarandon's character) offers what comfort she can to Matthew (Sean Penn's character) but also tries to guide him to an open admission of his crimes and an acceptance of forgiveness by telling him "I want the last face you see to be the face of love, so i'll be the face of love for you."
