Solar storms are highly charged particles from the sun being ejected and the earth being in the path of the jet (known as a Coronal Mass Ejectin)

The CME hits the earths atmosphere and is deflected by the Earth's Magnetic field. This causes things like the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) andthe Southern Lights.

The CME can go through the magnetic field, if the polarity of the CME is the right polarity. (I can never remember if they are the same or different) If the CME makes it through the magnetic field then electrical equipment can be fried by the highly charged particles.

There is a really good season on this sort of thing on National Geographic at the moment.

The only way to protectthings is to turn them off, apart from that like most things in nature man can do little to protect himself/herself

Mother nature has taken care of most already. There are 2 major particles that build the protection for us. The beta particles are attracted to the north pole and makes it negative. The other is alfa particles and they are attracted the south pole and make it positive. This provides a tremendous charge that holds the ozone layer in place. It is also known as the Van Allen belt.. The holes that is worrying every body occur at the poles where nobody lives. The holes are natural and is caused by the solar winds colliding with the magnetic field. The ozone layer automatic adjust the thickness to protect us.The layer is ozone or O3 . If the layer thins a little some alfa particles will come through and bombard the Nitrogen which trans mutates to Oxygen and then becomes part of the O3 layer.
