If you watch closely near the end of the show, they announce how many people made it through to Hollywood, but the ironic part is that they only show 2-3 at most during the entire 1 to 2 hr show. They spend the whole show showing the terrible contestants. This is what hikes ratings. We watch to see the the humiliation, during the 1st few shows, not the talent.

Some are in belief that they really have the voice that could launch a thousand ships / some are after their five minutes of fame whatever the cost / and some are hoping to get spotted to further their career in modeling and onto tv - it all makes a programme and the guys at the top filthy rich at the contestants expense. when the folks get involved the contestant is so in the land of make believe. It all adds up to similar shows ie BB etc., they want fame and oh boy do they change for sure.

I think there are definitely some who are faking it just to get on tv, but the judges who comb through those hundreds of thousands of people (not the Big 3, there are other judges/producers who comb through everyone else before sending just a fraction of them to Simon, Randy and Paula) try to weed those ones out. I think the majority of the people who are really bad but think they've got talent have only sung along to the radio or with headphones on. People who are tone deaf probably sing much better with music playing, and then fall apart with no other instruments or vocals to hold them up. They could also be playing the music loud enough that they think they are hearing their own voice when it is really just the (talented) person on the radio.

If they didn't show the idiots, which most of them are, noone would watch the show and it's ratings would plummet. Most of those clowns you see auditioning are in it because they know they can't sing and either were dared to go on and make an *** out of themselves or just want to get their face on tv for 2 minutes. I respect the ones that actually really want to be there and wish they wouldn't show the idiots because to me it isn't the least bit funny watching someone make a complete *** out of themselves and ruining the show.

Im pretty sure that they just don't know how bad they are, they probably have people close to them telling the how good they are so not to hurt there feelings and then they go onto shows like american idol and are genuinely dissapointed when they are told the truth!

alot of people lie to their kids and freinds. I think them making fun of someone or letting someone thru who is obviously not right in the head or a little slow is wrong and then just trash them is horrific, AMerican idol will be more select on the mental ones next year cause they are catching hell this season

They just want attention. Like that guy Ian who was on So You Think You Can Dance. He knows he can't sing. He just wants to be in the limelight. They're called attention whores.

They just want their 2 minutes of fame.
I wish they'd quit showing the idiots time after time.
They'll keep on until we have to see IAN as much as William Hung.
I think him & that girl who couldn't sing & wanted them to teach her have to be inbreds.
