It is illegal to copy DVDs. However if you own the DVD in question and wish to make a backup thats a risk you take and ethically I can't see a problem as long as your not selling them down the local car boot.
It is really annoying when one gets damaged and they are a damn sight easier to damage than CDs and twice as expensive.
DVD Shrink backup software can be found here:
http://www.dvdshrink-stop.com/index.asp?s=ovuk&a=dvdshrink&OVRAW=dvd%20shrink&OVKEY=dvd%20shrink&OVMTC=standard
You will need a DVD writer installed in your PC to use this software. But I suppose that is obvious.

Well if they're copyright it's illegal to copy them. Otherwise you need a DVD right which you can get free: such as real player. Put the DVD into the computer and select: 'copy'. When this is finished replace it with a blank or re-writable DVD and select 'burn.'

Depends which way you want to do it.
Get a recordable dvd player and play the dvd on a normal player then record it on to the other dvd.
Or download from the internet and record them from your computer, but thats illegal
