You can use the correct type of trans. fluid in your power steering unit, but you cannot substitute power steering fluid for trans. fluid

Not if you want your transmission to work. You can use transmission fluid in the power steering pump, but not the other way around. Transmissions have all kinds of components and functions that power steering pumps don't have to worry about.

as long as the fluid is Dexron II or Dexron III it will work in both transmission and power steering.

I had a 66' ElCamino and used Dextro II for years with no problem in P/S.
