I think in some cases, boredom can grow out of routine. In other words, it's entirely possible that when I was 6 I found scrubbing the dishes to be fun. Oh, look at the soap bubbles! Eww! Look how dirty the water gets! But now, 30 years later, there's nothing at all exciting about doing the dishes every day. I do them only because they have to be done. And yes, I'm bored every single time.

Only the intelligent get bored. Ambition that is contained without release into something constructive is what your looking for.
Our family has two such unintelligent women in it. They can sit by the hour staring at the walls, and do little else except complain about thier lot in life, and how much they hurt.
These people do nothing but complain. But THEY are never bored.
I raise Puppies, I don't have time to get bored.

the inability to occupy one's time in a way that satisfies. Children are only bored when they are stuck inside with limited resources. Send a child outside to play and you will rarely here 'I'm bored'. why....... because they have unlimited imagination and are able to create scenarios out of nothing. When we get older we lose our imagination and ability to create something from nothing..... Peter Jackson, Steven Speilberg, George Lucas have probably never said they were bored in their lives. They have held on to their imagination and allowed it to flourish and grow. it is very difficult in today's society to just let your mind wander and create 'what if' scenarios in order to entertain yourself.
Boredom is nothing more than the lack of imagination that allows people to think of new and creative ways to spend time.

A person who can't find contentment within. Such a person is always looking for 'outside' sources to find fulfillment on any/every level. When nothing can satisfy that, it leads to boredom.

boredom stems more from the lack of goals or challenges in the individuals life. doesnt mean that they don't have a lot to do or a full life, but more a point of routine and lack of expansion of "their" world with anything new or different.

general laziness. it occurs more in people who sleep in late. It takes a while for your brain to recover from your "sleep" state. More often than not when you just kinda laze around or prolong getting up, your brain stays in that mode. (gee i wish i knew all of the scientific words for this) Any way, its harder for the brain to come out of it and stay out of it the longer that you are in it.
Kind of a great big circular thing. But just getting up and being active will get you out of that state and reduce the boredom that you feel.

Excluding tedious and menial work situations, people cause their own boredom. Only people that are too stupid or lazy to entertain themselves, and expect others to entertain them, complain of being bored.

Boredon results when one spends a disproportionate amount of time in the physical portion of one's being. When physical stimulation wanes, these people have nowhere else to go. They have allowed their spiritual and emotional portions to atrophy and have no where else to go. Sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll ! Try doing something nice for someone else when you feel bored and get your mind off yourself.

To me, it's lack of overall purpose. I am in a retail job, which really is mundane. I make the most of it and excell to my most. The overall end of nothing but profits, doesn't satisfy my overall purpose of life. Money does not make the world go round, to me.
