In the game today I say Scott Rolen is the best all-around 3rd baseman in the game.
In the history of the game it has to be Micheal Jack Schmitt

Being a lifelong Orioles fan, it is without any difficulty that I tell you that the best 3B of all time is without a doubt Mike Schmidt. Brooks was a great one, no doubt, and you could easily argue Brooksies glove was better than Schmidt, but Schmidt is #1 easily.
Brooks and George Brett would sit 2 and 3.
The moron that thinks the best hitting 3B ever is Wade Boggs is seriously confusing hitting singles with being a great hitter.
In the game today, if I had to pick a 3B now to build my team around it would be Miguel Cabrera, FLA, over David Wright NYM. Both were better than Rolen last year, in an injury filled year for Rolen. However, it pretty reasonable to assume that both will continue to be better than Rolen. And the last guy I'd want on my team would be A-Rod, so let's just leave him out of this.
Remember Cabrera's rookie season, when the Marlins made, and won, the WS versus the Yankees?
Cabrera's 18 years old, and facing Roger Clemens in Game 1.
Clemens fires him some Hall of Fame chin music, and Cabrera hits the deck.
He then gets up and this 18 year old Venuzuelan hits the next pitch 420 feet into the right field stands.
At that point, you knew Cabrera was special.

This will shock you, but I think Matt Williams from the 80'/90' SF Giants was the best all around 3rd baseman. He is only second lifetime in fielding percentage to Brooks Robinson and he was a great hitter in SF. He carried the offensive load in SF for a long time.
Granted he was a shell of the player he was in Arizona, but he finally got a World Series ring there, so good for him.
The Giants have no loyalty to any of there players. They didn't even bother to try to re-sign with Williams and they let everyone walk, with the exception of Barry. If they ever want to win, they need to re-evaluate their priorities.
Their mortgaged their future for two years of sold out baseball games while Bonds chase's down Aaron. They are going to have a dismal year and there really is no light at the end of the tunnel.

Ever? I would say Mike Schmidt but if you're talking current only I would pick Miguel Cabrera, fewer errors and strikeouts than David Wright, more runs, a much higher average and very comparable stats in rbis and hrs. Scott Rolen is up there but being a whiny little punk causes him to lose points with me.
And I can only hope nobody brings up Alex Rodriguez because no matter where he is on the diamond he'll always be a shortstop cuz he sucks worse than at least 90% of the other regular third basemen in fielding

If we're talking all-time, it's Mike Schmidt.
Brook Robinson was a great fielder, but not that much better than Schmidt, and there was no comparison as far as power. Robinson simply wasn't in Schmitty's class as a hitter.
The current best is Scott Rolen. David Wright needs to have more than one good year to be considered the "best".

Many say he's the best ever so I'm saying that Scott Rolen is the best in the game today. By far the best defensive 3rd baseman and can hit for average and power offensively.

Miguel Cabrera is the best among active players. He can hit for average and power and has a good OBP. He'll cut his SO total every year, since he's still learning the game. He's only 23! He's also improving his defense and has a rocket for an arm. I'm watching him right now on the Venezuelan winter league finals.
Retired players? Mike Schmidt.

I would have to say Brooks Robinson. If you are talking about the best hitting third baseman then Wade Boggs. Or, if you are talking about the best power hitting third baseman then it is Mike Schmidt.

No question- David Wright will go down as the best 3rd basemen ever.
Look out for Brewers prospect Ryan Braun in the near future.
