Because nobody pays attention to what selflessness is anymore and also most everyone think they are "too good" to admit they're wrong when they're wrong...If this question is arising from the issues with the government these days...that's a good example to look at.

becoming???? dude have you just landed here or what? people have been totally self absorbed for the longest its called "entitlement" people really feel as if THEY are ENTITLED to live as they please be totally without regard for the next person or even rules and laws and do what they want no matter what and its self absorbed selfish b u l l s h i t is all it is. especially since the world is getting more dense with people and there is less space the jerks crawling up your bumper on the highways, the damn tailgaters, who the hell do they think they are 90% of them have NO IDEA of how to manuever that vehicle if something were to happen, often they cause accidents and just ride away unscathed, seriously this generation has been really the very worst for feeling ENTITLED and it gets worse everyday though so maybe it has finally hit into your personal comfort zone and you are noticing it now. sucks huh?

The self-esteem movement a couple decades ago started this mentality. The "you can do it" no matter what it is made people feel that they were extraordinarily special (even if they're just normal). That led to people thinking highly of themselves and that the rules don't apply to them. Though it is good to motivate children/people, it's not good to lie to them and tell them they can do anything they want to do or be anything they want to be. It's a lie. No matter how hard I try, I will never be in the NBA (I'm not athletically inclined, nor tall enough). However, what we should be focusing on is finding the strengths in the child/person and expanding on those.

Freedom has come to mean "freedom without limits"; whereas, historically freedom has traditionally meant "freedom within boundaries."

People don't take personal responsibility because adults have been preaching that we don't want to hurt the poor child's self-esteem by punishing them or giving them consequences. We now see the fruit of the self-esteem movement's labor. People also don't take responsibility because of the political nature of our country and that people would rather figure out how to work a system rather than work.

Ultimately, it comes down to a lack of maturity. Partly that is the parents' fault (for training their children [who are now parents] poorly) and partly that is the fault of the children [who are now parents] as they are adults and need to handle their own lives and grow up.

The mentality that "it doesn't matter if you lose or win" makes hard work seem meaningless and futile. Why would anyone want to work hard if one doesn't benefit from it? We are filling our generations with concepts that are rubbish and the results are pouring forth.

Immaturity, which is a direct result of bad parenting or no parenting. A lot of people think that when you reach a certain age you are automatically an adult. If you don't mature emotionally or mentally you will never grow up. We have a lot of 30, 40, and 50 year old teenagers in our society today.

has to do with the lack of teaching by parents and society on being a better person. left to the individual to seek growth. Marketing has a lot to do with what is acceptable behavior now vs before. the culture is very me and individualistic, without any personal responsibility

good question! if people would start taking responsibility for their own actions instead of blaming their religion, their parents, the government, or the whole effin world, then the world would be a lot better off.
