I have an HE washing machine and have tried using non-HE detergent in it. I've read that you can get away with using the non-HE stuff by using half of the normal amount of detergent.

We had a Brady-esque incident where the non-HE detergent foamed up so much that it escaped out the rear vent on the machine and resulted in the laundry room floor needing to be mopped up.

The agitation of the HE washer creates more bubbles with the non-HE detergent.

We use the Tide HE, both the regular HE and the Tide Free HE.
The latter is difficult to find. If you watch the sales at Sears, they sell a HE powdered detergent that is priced nice when on a great sale.

Check the Gardenweb laundry forum for more about HE washing machines. Those people really know their topic.
