You can download a firewall to protect you from many problems on the net and it will warn you if spyware on your pc is trying to dial home. But it won't protect you from infected cd's.
You also need anti spyware programs. All this software is legal and free;

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.

You need to install one anti virus;

If you are using the Internet, you should at least have an antivirus, antispyware and firewall program. This provides a comprehensive security system for your computer. Think of your computer's connection to the Internet like a highway. There are lanes which go from your computer to the Internet (i.e. outgoing traffic) and there are lanes which go from the Internet to your computer (i.e. incoming traffic) . The function of a firewall is to monitor incoming as well as outgoing traffic, to prevent any unauthorized traffic. Firewalls can help to block spyware but it won't be adequate. It is highly recommended you have an antispyware program. Here are some free security programs. Some people mentioned using Windows XP Firewall. I don't recommend it because it only monitors incoming traffic and not outgoing traffic. You will need to monitor both.

Free Firewalls http://www.filehippo.com/software/firewalls/
1. Sunbelt Kerio: one of most hassle free firewall I ever used.
2. Comodo: offers the best protection out of all the firewalls listed but can be difficult to use for novices.

Free Antispyware http://www.filehippo.com/software/antispyware/
1. Lavasoft's Ad Aware Personal Edition: easy to use but no real time protection.
2. Spybot Search & Destroy: offer very good protection. It provides real time protection. Great if you are using Internet Explorer and/or Firefox web browser.

There are 32,768 ports or door on a computer. Each port is designed to do a certain thing. 1 for http, 1 for ftp, etc etc.
A firewall is designed to not allow programs inside a computer from accessing the internet and computers outside your computer from accessing your computer. It's like determining who can come in and out your front door.

Spyware and Viruses and other such malicious software usually enters your computer a result of malicious means. It's like bypassing your security system. There is no cureall in preventing such things, other than disconnecting from the internet and not allowing anybody to access your computer. The best thing to do is go with a reputible company that offers products that deter Spyware and Viruses, such as McAfee and Norton and update the computer on a regular basis.

Simple - you can't. Spyware is generally delivered on the back of programs that you invite to download on your system. These can be programs that look very friendly and inviting but the licensor has granted 3rd party rights to install bits and pieces that invade your privacy. I don't endorse products but I suggest that before you install or look for malware-spyware removal programs, try www.prevx.com. I uninstalled norton av and firewall from all my family computers and use this software because it's cheaper and it works and I've not had any software problems since.
It's free for 28 days and I think it's bloody marvellous and my daughter surfs all sort of peer to peer shi1t and everything has been detected and removed.

There's a free program called SpywareBlaster which blocks spyware very effectively, but, it's also worth having a couple of spyware scanners as well, such as: Spybot and a-squared Free etc., on your PC, there's plenty of free and very effective stuff available to deal with spyware.
