also can they be cut back as they are trailing on the floor now

I'm amazed they're still alive!

Yes, I'd cut them back if they're looking stressed. Clip out the dead bits and shorten the rest back to a joint. How much you shorten them depends on how brave you are.
If you can wait until the weather warms up (in the UK) then I would wait and then in the Spring cut them back and give them a good feed.

Frost is your real enemy. Prolonged frost should finish them off, which is why most gardeners bring them into the greenhouse over winter. They are kept there on a low water ration and cut back in the autumn before bringing in to over-winter.

I wouldn't like to argue with a professional, but they're one of my wife's favourites, and I was sure they were an Annual, so I would have thought that anywhere in the UK there would be a lot of dead bits by now!! and they won't be recovering.
Am I wrong then?
