Breastfeeding is not the same as being pregnant, you can pretty much eat whatever you want as long as it doesn't make you incredibly sick, which you wouldn't want to do anyways. Caffeine isn't really a problem. Some people observe it making their babies jittery, but I've never had that problem, and if you do of course you should stop, but it's not that big a deal. You can also drink alcohol, you just can't feed your baby while you're drunk. A rule of thumb is if you're ok to drive, you're ok to feed. Only about 5% of alcohol passes through the breastmilk. For the most part, milk is made up of calories and nutrients pulled from your body, and if your consuming things the baby doesn't need, like alcohol or caffeine, then it passes through the milk just like it does through your bloodstream and carries on to the liver. Nothing gets "trapped" in the milk and passed onto the baby in large quantities.

first make a list of all the questions you need answers to and take out the list at the doctors. If you tell them you have a list they'll make time. As for foods the foods you ate while pregnant if it was healthy food it should be ok. some babies do react to strong flavors foods and some don't. some react to foods that cause gas. Rule of thumb, if you're not sure and it doesn't bother you, try it. If nothing happens ( no gas or extra crying etc) then you can continue with small amounts of the food. the don'ts that people have previously said are a good list to follow but only you can really see if there's a bad reaction. People who eats lots of hot peppers find that their babies are ok with that kind of food, but the rest of us may not be able to handle it..

First off - you pay your doctor for his services. NEVER let him make you feel rushed. Go in with your questions written down so you don't forget them and make him take the time to answer them. He works for you!
Second - there are no foods that all mothers need to avoid while nursing. Unless you notice your child has a reaction to something specific in your diet, eat whatever you like. (See link below.)
ETA:
And you CAN smoke, drink caffeine and drink alcohol if you use some common sense about it.
Caffeine is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use in breastfeeding mothers. Up to the equivalent of five 5-oz cups of coffee per day is fine unless you notice that your specific baby has a problem with it.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.” You should wait approx. 2 hours after having a drink to nurse. You DO NOT have to "pump and dump" to clear the milk from your system. It leaves your milk in the same way it leaves your blood. A good general rule is "if your head is clear, your milk is too" or "if you feel sober enough to drive, you're sober enough to nurse."
A mom who can't stop smoking SHOULD still breastfeed. Breastfeeding provides many immunities that help your baby fight illness and can even help counteract some of the effects of cigarette smoke on your baby: for example, breastfeeding has been shown to decrease the negative effects of cigarette smoke on a baby's lungs. It's definitely better if breastfeeding moms not smoke, but if you can't stop or cut down, then it is better to smoke and breastfeed than to smoke and formula feed.

The first three answers help but I will go father and tell you to eat vegetables grains fruits drink soy milk and eat nuts if you have a history of a problem with peanuts then do not eat. Caffeine is a no no, no coffee or soft drinks with carbonation, whatever you eat or drink your baby will also eat, if the baby is hyper and you eat sugar or drink caffeine your child will react to it as well. No red meats fish is better than red meat, don't start a cholesterol problem at an early age. if the food you eat bothers you you can be sure it will affect the baby. No SMOKING or nicotine patches, and no antibiotics unless directed by a doctor, but for more information go to www.md.com and check out the suggestions their. But by all means ask your doctor. Avoid shell fish they contain Iodine and your child could have a reaction to it. Mike can cause mucus build up and asthma as well. hope this helps.

You need to eat a healthy, well balanced diet overall, but coffee, coldcuts and occassional junk food won't hurt the baby. Make sure to drink enough fluids, get plenty of vitamin rich foods, calcium and protein. Congrats on the new baby!

Eat your regular food. Make sure you get plenty of calcium so that you don't lose bone mass. Some babies seem sensitive to strong flavored foods like cabbage or garlic that may be passed on in your milk, but most don't seem to notice. Eat sushi. Don't feel guilty.

you should eat what you ate while you were pregnant.
A healthy well rounded diet, with lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains, protein, sources of calcium, etc..
Be sure to keep taking your prenatal vit. every day as well as drinking lots of fluids.
i personally noticed when i ate lots of red sauce, broccoli, or spicy foods it caused my little one to have gas and discomfort. The product Beano helps with this, when your body is braking down the food it is not done completely and it cause the gas for you and the little one, but if you take this product when you eat food known to causes gas your body has the enzymes needed to brake down the food. I hope my info. was helpful and what you were looking for. Blessings!

Really, all you need to do is to eat a healthy, well balanced diet. Good for you...good for babe. Don't feel bad for the occasional indescretion though, it is O.K. to treat yourself. You can find some great info here:

Foods that you ate while pregnant should all be fine, you're baby was exposed to the taste of them through amniotic fluid, so having breast milk similarly flavored will be fine.
