For a "normal" woman with a "normal" 28 day cycle (I have yet to meet one of these normal women, but anyway) day 1 is the first day of her period. Day 14 is when she ovulates. Sperm live 3 to 5 days inside you, while your egg only lives one day, so typically if a woman has sex between days 9-14 she can get pregnant.

So you get pregnant 2 weeks before your period.

Yes, but scientifically 10 days before and ten days after is the allotted safest time not to get pregnant but if it happens in between it is a rare case and pregnancy might happen in the fallopian tubes which is very dangerous, that is why you need to see a doctor. There have been cases of pregnancies as long as 20 days after. Again I am not a doctor.

It all depends on your body. I have normal 28 day cycles, but a short luteal phase (after ovulation). This means that I actually ovulate around day 17 instead of day 14. Get a basal body thermometer and start tracking your cervical mucus and you will know exactly when you ovulate.

I would recommend getting a ClearBlue ovulation test kit if you are trying to get pregnant. It detects LH surge. When it does, the next 24 to 36 hours is when you need to have 'action'. Clearblue is the number 1 test according to the research I have been doing lately.
