The real question is, "WHY would you change the power steering fluid in a 1992 bmw 325i?"

If you must, get a turkey baster and draw the old fluid out of the reservoir, and then add new fluid.

Sorta pointless exercise, seems to me.

Well - the problem with changing it by pulling the lower hose (which is the only way to do it without a machine) is that the vehicle is old and the hose may break at the fitting. This is especially true in a high corrosion area (I live in MD and this happened to me many times working on old cars no matter what I did). You can try it, however you need to be sure to use line wrenches to remove and reconnect the line, otherwise you run the risk of damaging the fitting anyway because the line fittings tend to be fairly soft and will strip easily with a box wrench. If you just want to get some out, you can suck it out of the reservoir with anything. Problem there is you still have all the fluid in the pump, rack and lines to deal with and it will just contaminate your new fluid. You could also take it to a shop and for $80-120 get it done with the machine and save yourself the headache. How did it get orange in the first place? What in the world is in there? Or did you just buy the vehicle?

So you have an early e36 (or late e30) and want to change the power steering fluid. What I would do is this: those cars all need power steering hose replacements (to the reservoir) eventually. The fluid will mostly all come out when the old hose is removed. Put fresh fluid in and you're all set! Good luck.

Me, I use a Big Syringe and connected to a hose draw it out as much as you can, then refill. I made myself a device like this since I overfilled my car once, and by the way , is that a 2.5? Because I have being having a heck of a time looking for the valve head for my friend's, 2.7's can be found everywhere. I considered your Q to be because the fluid is old.

There is no point in changing the fluid, nor is it required.. unless your fluid is burnt.. which means yer gonna have to replace the pump eventually

why would you need to change the power steering fluid? If anything you probably need to just top it up. try lifting the bonnet...

why would you want to? there is no way to totally drain out all the old fluid any way. there would always have traces of the old stuff still there
