When I had my first Dr. appt (at about 8 weeks) he said that I was overweight and I could lose weight. I told him that I'm not very hungry, nauseated, and I drink tons and tons of fluids. I've been sleeping ALOT. He said that that was fine and my baby would take all the nutrients that it needs from whatever I do eat during the day. He said that I could lose 40 lbs and still have a very healthy baby. I'm kinda confused. I know that I'm overweight to begin with. I know with my pregnancy, b/c i am overweight, I shouldn't gain too much weight. But losing 40 lbs during pregnancy? Is that really healthy for me and my baby? Yesterday started the beginning of 11 weeks for me and I've lost 13 lbs already, even though I'm not trying. Thanks for any answers :)

Being overweight in general is not healthy. However, you shouldn't focus on dieting. You should focus on eating healthy food--think about the quality of the food your baby is receiving. Additionally, you are NOT eaten for two. You don't need to eat twice as much food. I recommend going to a dietician for advice.

40 lbs. is way too much weight to lose during pregnancy. I was also overweight when I became pregnant with my child now. I weighed 195 and in my first Trimester I went all the way down to 179. My Dr. recommended a Nutritionist and she said that even that was a little to much weight to be losing. She told me to drink stuff like Ensure or Carnation instant breakfast. I would definitely not try to lose any more weight than MS has already caused you to lose. Just stick to a healthy diet and you should be just fine. That is what I am doing I am now 26 weeks along and only gained 4 lbs. back, and my baby is doing just fine. Congrats and Good luck.

40 pounds is alot of weight to lose... going by nutrition charts it says obese people should only gain about 10 pounds and overweight people should gain about 10-20 pounds.. Now as I am not sure of your actual weight or height I don't know the whole situation. I also started out heavy and at 17 weeks have lost 7 pounds (not trying).. everyone gains and loses differently but the baby will still get the nutrients from your food whether or not you tip the scales.

I would say though to eat healthy, get daily exercise (such as walking 30 minutes) and take your prenatals.. nature is going to do the rest.

Good Luck to you and do not stress over the scale :)

Just to let you know, all women loose weight and gain weight throughout the entire pregnancy, so its completely normal that you are loosing weight right now, and soon you'll probably gain some! you will however go back and forth so no matter what, just as long as your baby is still growing and is healthy, your doing just fine. Congrats to you mommy!

Best thing you can do is eat properly and excercise such as walking. Other than that, you shouldn't be changing anything to gain or lose weight during pregnancy. And above all else, you should speak with your doctor, he/she will guide your properly as to what your particular pregnancy may or may not need.

i lost 40 lbs with my third pregnancy, I was NOT trying to lose that weight, as I was not overweight to begin with. I lost it because I could only tolerate fresh fruit and veggies, uncooked with no sauce and whole grains. My doctor was not concerned in the least because of what I was eating. My daughter was 5 lbs when born, on the small side, but very very healthy.

Trying to lose weight is not good, but it can happen naturally. Women with PCOS who are overweight often drop tons of weight when they are pregnant without trying. Just eat well and your body will do the rest. Also, the below site is a great resource for overweight women who are pregnant.
