Since I'm 21, I guess I could refer to myself as Ms. but I'd like to know what you guys think.

Miss refers specifically to an unmarried female.

Ms. refers to a female who wishes their marital status not to be public knowledge..it is appropriate to use Ms. if you don't know a particular persons status also. Using Miss or Mrs is rude if you don't know their situation and you turn out to use the wrong one.

Miss is for "young" single females, and Ms. is for adult single females. The perception of age/maturity and degree of formality vary, and it's use fluctuates. I'd say that at 21, Miss could be appropriate, particularly if you are still in school. Ms. may be appropriate if you are in a formal/business situation. The gray area is probably 20-24, depending on the situation.

using miss tells everyone that you are single - using ms. reveals nothing about your marital status - thats the reason ms. was developed - so that women can have an undefined title (regarding marriage) the same as men do (since mr. doesnt reveal marital status -

as for your own purposes - using ms. may make some people take you a little more seriously and it may make some other people prejudge you as being a feminist

Traditionally Miss was used for women who were not married and Ms. for women who had been married and either widdowed or divorced.

Todays society uses "miss" for a younger unmarried woman and "ms." for an older more mature unmarried woman..

I think there is even a pronounctuational difference as well. miss (miss) and ms. as (miz)

hope that helps!

p.s. KED is right about the unknown status of a woman! i forgot about that!

I personally use "Miss" for anyone who LOOKS like they're under legal age (and I'm not a bad guess). If I'm not sure of their age, or if they look older and I'm not sure of their marital status, I use "Ms." We had a math teacher in High School who was in her early 30s who PREFERRED Ms. over Miss.

I also immediately (and kindly!) correct anyone who calls ME "Ms.", because I'm married.
