Depends on what you're after:
1. Low Maintenance: edge to Lexus
2. Low Price: slight edge to Lexus.
3. Power and handling: HUGE advantage BMW
4. Fuel efficiency: edge Lexus
5. Holds resale value: tie
6. Fun factor in driving: HUGE advantage BMW
7. Boring to drive: HUGE advantage Lexus.
I'm a driving enthusiast, I prefer BMW over ANY Lexus model. Your mom may have other preferrences. Good luck!

To answer your question, will require you to answer another question. I will explain. The two cars are very different. Yes, they are both premium brands, with nice leather seats, and great stereo systems, but that is where the similarities end. Like all things in life, there is a trade-off that is made between performance and reliability. BMW is the better handling and performing car hands down. If you enjoy driving, then you can never go wrong with BMW. Behind Porsche, they are the best. BMW is however, prone to require much higher levels of repairs and maintenance than Lexus, which is where the Lexus brand really shines. Lexus builds a rock-solid car that will require much less maintenance and repair, (which costs money.) Which aspect is most important? That is the question that you must answer. Clearly, if performance is most important, then choose BMW. If knowing that the car will never leave you stranded is most important, then choose Lexus. Both choices are fine vehicles.
PS - If you do choose to go with the BMW X5, (it would be my preference,) be sure that it is a 2004 model or newer, as the overall quality of these newer years has been much improved over the previous, which I would avoid. I also recommend sticking with the 3.0 six, as the V8's only run up the cost of ownership, and BMW has had some issues with these engines. Good luck!

even if BMW looks as regardless of the actuality that they could be somewhat classier, the maintance is very expensive. Like oil differences that ought to value a Lexus like 20-30 would value somewhat a BMW 60-80. factors are also so a lot more desirable expensive on BMWs than Lexus. Lexus's are tremendous sturdy automobiles and when you're saving money for the destiny it is what I propose.

Without a doubt, the BMW, especially a 2004 or newer. The 2003 is not recommended. The 2004 models improved their four-wheel drive by adding a new system called X-drive. The computer varies the power to each of the 4 wheels based on driving conditions to prevent loss of traction and control.
My friend bought the RX330 and wished she spent the money on the X5 after she drove mine. She's actually going to trade the Lexus in for the brand new X5.

Honestly, this is one you can't trust the media on. They will praise the BMW for better driving and more organic nature, but in reality, the Lexus will last much longer. BMW's do not have good reliability records, and they tend to be on the cramped side. If your mom were selfish, she would get a BMW to satisfy her desire to drive. If she was selfless, she would pick the Lexus to pamper everyone that rides in it.
That's my honest opinion.
P.S. - And Lexus is not even that bad of a handling machine - they've come a long way. (look them up). =]

Go with the BMW. The Lexus 330 has been having quite a few problems lately (transmission and electrical).

Lexus hands down. BMW will see the shop at least 3 times more often than any Lexus ever will. Resale for the Lexus is higher as well. Safety is higher.

My favorite car maker is BMW, but if it were up to me i would drive the lexus. It will last longer, get better milage (assuming that you are getting the 4.4i BMW) and alll around is better made. To those who talk about putting americans out of work, toyota has 7 plants in america employing over 125,000. Most japanese cars are more american than the american made ones.

Interior-wise, the x5 is all leather and the back seats are electronicly adjustable, the x5 has a really big moon roof and the r330 doesnt. anyways im saying you should get the x5. i hope i helped you out. good luck.

Lexus RX330(3.5L V6)was more perform in fuel consumption section as below detail:
City (mpg) - estimated 19 [6]
Highway (mpg) - estimated 24 [6]
Fuel-Tank Capacity (gal / L) 19.2 / 72
(URL: http://www.lexus.com/models/RX/detailed_specifications.html)
Anyway, those car almost got similar standard in safety, accessories, built/material quality.
But BMW surely beat the RX330 in torgue performance (4.8L, 350bhp), offroad drive( with All wheels drive & chasis design).
The other signification different is the price, X5 surely more expensive.
