Well I'm not too sure that lawyers wear black coats all the time, but it does seem more professional, and with the doctors coats, it's easier to see blood stains on a white coat instead of a black one.

In most countries of the world lawyers wear black, or at the very least garments with some black trim or lining. This tradition is said to have begun in 17th Century England. In 1694 all of the nation's judges attended the funeral of Queen Mary dressed in black robes as a sign of mourning. The official period of morning lasted many years, and overlapped with much of Britain's colonial adventures in other countries. The black robe tradition spread around the world and thus still persists today. Red is the second-most popular color for judicial robes, which likely reflects the fact that red has historically been a color associated with royalty, and judges were originally appointed as servants of the monarch.

lawyers wearing black coats, i am not sure
doctors wearing white coats, there was some history. in the past, if there is more blood/dirtyness on a doctor's white coat, it would be considered he is more experienced. sounds sick, but yea...
doctors wear white coats now, as a symbol of cleanliness and pureness :)

I think Drs wear white because it is/was associated with being clean and sanitary. Not all lawyers, nowdays, wear black.

maybe bcoz it's ethical for lawyers to wear black as our system comes from britain ....and doctors wear white as it is a sign of godliness bcoz there profession is considered next to god..............
