There is this nice, sweet lady who I work with she is good natured and everything BUT she does not stop talking!! I can't make eye contact with her because she just launches in to some story or other and will go on and on and on for minutes at a time. I once asked her how to use a certain function on the copier and she kept me there for 30 mins telling me about her son and his neighbours, nothing to do with copying I know but she finds a way to relate anything to one of her anicdotes. I don't want to be rude to her or make her feel bad but it's getting to the point that I am trying to avoid her at all costs, I even hid behind a cabinet once to get away from her! so anyone know how to gently dissuade her ear chewing?

Just say very firmly, but very nicely "I'm so sorry, but I've got to get this straight back to my boss because s/he wants it 10 minutes ago - we're rushed off our feet at the moment there's hardly time to draw breath" - that gives you an excuse for next time too!

Attack is the best form of defence. Think of all the boring things that you do in your life. When you see her coming do a pre-emptive strike and YOU start the conversation, don't stop to draw breath but keep talking. Eventually she may avoid you and tell the other people in the office that You are boring. I have tried it on several occasions and it usually works. If she asks why you are talking rubbish then tell her why. Alternatively you could just tell her to sod off.

Be assertive and tell her you've not got time to listen to her dribbling today. Yawn a lot and keep interrupting her saying 'shhh did you hear that?'. Also look anywhere but at her when she talks. Looking your watch, especially if you're not really wearing one, is always a winner. I am a veteran in these situations, as I seem to be one of the priveliged few that has 'talk crap to me for ages; I've got all the time in the world' tatooed on my forehead. Enjoy yourself..

She sounds like a sweet lady but lonely so she talks. Be kind to her one day you might be in her place. Take time for her, maybe after work meet her for coffee.A little kindness goes a long way. So be nice.

Two Options
1.Scream "Shut Up!" when she starts talking to you and if it looks like she is going to cry or sumthing start laughing and make it seem like it was just a joke.
2. You start talking her to death about something you know she doesn't want to hear about, and don't give her time to but in. Next thing you know she'll be trying to avoid you.

You could politely say, Im in a bit of rush now, I'll talk to you later - its good as a get away but it'll wear out pretty fast

Maybe shes lonely and depressed and if you don't listen to her she might kill herself. How would you feel then?
Just grin and bear it
