its more about the tradition, match of the day has had this slot for a long time, and its keeping it there. it gives the production team a chance to edit things together with the interviews and highlights and football analysis. also they do not want to compete with other programmes in the prime time slots and so stay out of everybody's way at a later time. it gives them a license to run into the night if there are many games, and many people do not mind staying up late because they have sunday, traditionally a day of rest

How many channels have you got available to you now? If you have Sky you've got hundreds of alternative channels. I do accept that most of it is crap, but there are viable options other than BBC1.
