For picking at things, and scratching our itches, something to nibble on when nervous, clawing, getting those annoying security stickers off of CD's and DVD's, some pigs use them for thier noses, need I go on?

nails are basically an extension of your finger bones. they are there to help you pick things up but most importantly they protect youf finger tips from being damaged by banging them on surfaces, etc. hope this clears a few things up for you...
