What does the coil do? This makes the second one I have had to put on. Why does it keep going out?

They mostly go out because someone hooked 12 volts straight to the coil instead of going through the resistor. People also like to put special high performance coils on that don't do anything the OEM coil does except make you poorer and burn out a lot.

Could be you are using the wrong coil... If your car is supposed to have an internal ballast resistor type and you are using a non resistor coil it will fry it eventualy because of to much voltage
