CD/DVDs not Read
1. Check the drive status in My Computer and in Device Manager. If the drive is detected properly and the device status if fine in DM, continue with step 4.
2. If the device has yellow exclamatory marks in DM, reinstall the device drivers for CD/DVD Drive. If you find any of the following error codes:
Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41
Provide the dougknox-Upper filter Lower filter fix. Download and run the fix from this link:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs
If the fix fails to not work, try these steps
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=bph07146&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
3. If it fails again, try Windows XP Repair. If that too fails, then go to steps 6.
4. If the drive neither found in DM nor found in My Computer, then there might be a hardware detection issue. In this case, try to resetting the BIOS once. And then undo any hardware or software changes done recently.
If it fails again, then ask the customer to remove and reseat the drive once. Suggest this, only if the customer is comfortable. Provide the manual to the EU, also warn the user that if any physical damages are done during the removal process, the warranty will void.
5. If the drivers and the device status is fine, but not reading the CDs, ask the EU to try reading different medias. OR if the System reads CDs fine and not reading DVDs, then reinstall the DVD Decoder once.
6. If all the above solutions fails to resolve the issue, run a Compaq Diagnostics Test to confirm the status of the drive. If the drive fails the Test, then it should be replaced.
You can download the Compaq Diagnostics Tool from the following links:
For Notebooks released before R3000:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp22501-23000/SP22711.exe
For R3000 and all other latest Model Notebooks released after R3000:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software3/COL7178/ob-21485-1/SP25498.exe
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download the file and Save it to Hard Disk.
2. Double Click on the file to run.
3. It will create the SWSETUP FOlder in C Drive.
4. After running that, please Open My Computer, Open C Drive, then Open SWSETUP Folder, and then Open DISK1 Folder.
5. Run SETUP.EXE File.
This will install the Diagnostics for Windows in Control Panel.
To run Disganotics for Windows, please take these steps:
1. Click Start>Control Panel.
2. Inside Control Panel, please Open Diagnostics for Windows Icon.
3. Select Test tab.
4. Then select CD Drive Test.

If the computer isn't recognizing the CD at ALL, and when you have inserted it it gives you an error in Explorer when you try to browse to the CD drive, then there is a problem either with the drive or the CD, and you'll have to figure out which of those it is by yourself.
If the CD still WORKS when you go through Explorer, then you just have AutoPlay turned off.. you can turn it back on by right-clicking the CD drive and enabling it in the Properties menu.

Are you saying that it will not autodetect the CD? Which means that the autodetect feature maybe turned off inwhich case you will simply need to turn the function back on. The troubleshooting I indicated below may help.
Or are you saying that if you go into the Windows Explorer you cannot see the CD-drive? In that case you may have to reinstall the device. But before you do that go into the Control Panel and click on System. Once there you will find a tab called Hardware, click on that. Then click on Device Manager. There you will find a listing of the hardware on your machine. Find the CD Rom and expand the listing. Find your CD Rom and then right mouse click on it. There is a troubleshooting button there click on it and follow the instructions.
Good luck.

sounds like you have 1 of 2 problems.
either your cd rom is bad (unlikely)
or you need to let it build a new driver.... that is easy too
first, right click "my computer" then go to properties.
2: click the "hardware" tab, then click the button "device manager"
in there, you will see cd-rom/dvd roms, or something similar.
click the plus sign, then on the menu that opens up, right click the drive in question, then click uninstall.
after it is finished, reboot your computer, and it will build a new driver. Don't worry, it wont ask for a disk, and your computer does contain the files necessary for this operation.
Ohh, if it dont reinstall automatically when you reboot, then open device manager back up, and click the "action" tab, then "find new hardware"
you may or may not have to reboot one more time. I recommend rebooting either way.
Dont worry, none of this is hard. just print my suggestion, and try it.
If it is the auto run, then right click on the cd-rom, click '"properties" then click the "auto play" tab. Click the restore defaults button.
PS, if the above dont work, then check the plugs on the drive to make sure they did not come lose. if that is not the problem, then you will need to replace the drive.

Try the CD in another computer
Try another CD in the computer your using
It could be the CD itself...or it could be the CD rom.
It could be the type of media your inserting. For instance, Mac computers are very sensitive on what type of media they will use in there systems.

Make sure that the cd drive is connected, you did not say so im assuming that you are using a desktop. Open the case and make sure the 4 pin power cord is connected to it, and that the belt cord (IDE cord) is connected nicely/
