The term lance (Greek: λÏγÏη, Lance: lancea, German: lanze, French: lance, Spanish: lanza, Italian: lancia) has become a catchall for a variety of different pole weapons based on the spear. The name is derived from lancea, Roman auxiliaries' javelin, although according to the OED, the word originally came from the Iberian Language. The lance, under many names, was also heavily employed in the Euroasian Steppe and steppe people like the Sarmatians were renowned for their use of the lance. In the strictest sense, the lance is a heavy, long thrusting spear used on horseback. Often, any spear which is not thrown (e.g. a thrusting spear) is called a lance when used from horseback. A long thrusting spear which is used by infantry is usually referred to as a pike while most throwing spears are generally fall under the definition of a javelin.

To lance something is to pierce it. Like using a needle to poke a small hole in the side of a blister. Doctors use a device called a lancet to perform the function. There is a British medical journal called "The Lancet".
