flat side forward or back?

thank you for your answers. HAD I not been up all night sewing on a costume for a play, I WOULD have paid attention to what direction the needle faced when I took it out, and IF I had the directions, I WOULD have looked at them. I just hate stupid answers like that! My machine belonged to my grandmother, and I did not GET the instruction manual. For gosh sakes, why can't people just answer a question without all the obvious and un-needed advice? I will try to get back for a best answer vote...thanks to all of you who just said...towards the back...LOL

Generally it's flat side backward.

Most machines open towards the back. If yours does, just tilt it back shine a light where the needle was and you'll see where the flat side is. Then you'll know how to insert your needle.

Flat side goes backwards in my machine. If not in yours, try again!
