its not a matter of 'sucking someone dry' when dealing with a parent who didnt help in any way, shape or form.
as for getting the support now: those people are wrong... there have been some cases (nationwide) about people who have sued their deadbeat parent who never paid to help raise them. if your mom had an agreement or court order you would have a better chance of winning.
justification is only in his mind, for his excuses are not helping anyone else but him.
BUT you want something you will never get, a piece of mind from the years of watching your mom suffer. so odds are, you would only stress yourself out with this issue... when he has nothing to give now.
AND the real questions are, are you doing it because of his lame excuses and are you willing to keep him in your life?
in my case, i chose not to.

Each state has there own laws, there is a statue of limitations even on back child support in most states. So no the mothers cannot collect years down the line unless you have a foreign law book that we don't know about. I have been over this many times with the court and attorney's.

You could not, but your mother could. It doesn't matter if you are now an adult. Your father owes your mother money for child support she never received. Don't listen to the people in here who say otherwise. There are many cases where fathers are finally found, and they are made to pay back the child support they never owned up to. A co-worker of mine just got her settlement, and her children are grown and have children of their own.
But, as I said, this is money owed to your mother, not you.
All assets are succeptable to pay this off. So, any retirement, stocks, investments, property, etc can be used to repay this money. There will also be fees, interest, and penalties added to the amount.

No. I am sorry but 18 is when child support stops. All you can do is keep praying and move on. My son is 4 and that sperm donor is getting away with it. He is on supplemental disability and by law he can't play child support. So as long as I have breath in my body, I will always be there for my son. That is going to affect him and not you. I bet you and whoever raised you will have more out of life that he ever will. You have a darn good mother because I struggle eveyday to take care of him. Drugs are not an excuse. I have learned that people make choices. No one is forced to do anything. He made his choice. Good Luck and God Bless you and your mother!

Your father does not owe you a dime, so no you cannot get child support for yourself from him. Now, if you had still been a minor your mother could file for child support, but as you are not, it is too late. So no, your father owes nothing because no one filed anything when you were a minor.

Everyone who just answered you is right. I'm sure you didn't want to hear what they had to say but come on, face it, people make mistakes in their lives. Have you ever made a mistake and hoped that someone was going to forgive you too??? He for one thing did the right thing by staying out of your life. He could have ruined your life by trying to stick around. And the reason your Mother didn't approach him with all the domestic stuff is because she knew he had problems and probably just wanted him to stay away and get better one day. I think as an adult, you should at least talk to him as a friend. Ask him what he went through and why he chose a harsh life. Put your harsh feelings behind you for those were the things that happened in the past. Forgivness in your heart is good for your soul.

As the child, I don't believe that there is anything that you can do. You would need to contact your local county's child support division to find out for sure. Normally the county and state collect child support unless some other agreement was made at the time.

No once you are over 18 there is nothing thqt can be done. Your mother may have been able to file for arrears.. but it has been too long. I know it is painful and hard to think about... but its not just about MONEY. Do you have it in yourself to forgive? It sounds like he is trying to make for lost time, everyone has mistakes... was it alright for him to do?? NO... but does it make it better to hold a grudge. Sounds like he does want to be a part of your life... better late than never... andif you cant forgive... then tell him and move on.
