My girlfriend & I had a mishap approx. 22 weeks back. & because of this mishap, we've both been worried about the possibility of pregnancy. Readily admitting she's justifiably been a tad bit more worried than myself, due to the fact that pregnancy @ the age we're at is undoubtedly frowned upon. Our situation is definitely a case of fear reigning superior over what many would believe to be common sense. She's gone through nearly 11 pregnancy tests, she's been to Planned Pregnancy, where the nurse said she was not pregnant, & up until now she's shown no signs of pregnancy. Lately, she's been growing a "pouch." Although, it is not drastic, it is apparent. What I find odd is that it's only now occurring, @ 22 weeks. If she's not pregnant, which I am more lenient toward, what would be causing this pouch? She has been gaining, not losing weight, so weight gain is out of the question. Any help would be appreciated.

Her 'pouch' could be bloating or it could be psychosomatic (she is worried that she is pregnant and causing some physical signs of pregnancy to 'manifest'). I would guess that it is a psychosomatic because no one should still be obsessed with being pregnant more than 11 tests later so obviously she is in quite a state of fear! These symptoms should diminish once she has had enough time since the pregnancy scare to be convinced that she is, in fact, NOT pregnant. At the most, by 40 weeks since the mishap, which is how long a normal pregnancy is. Good luck!

PLEASE tell her to go or take her to the Dr. or Planned Parenthood and ask for a BLOOD test. If the blood test comes back negative, then tell her to ask for Progesterone -- that will help her ovulate and she will most likely have a period.

If she is NOT pregnant and hasn't had a menstrual cycle for 22 weeks she has a significant build-up of tissue and blood, which will cause a "pooch".

If she is young and if she IS pregnant for the first time, then a little "pooch" is all she might have at 22 weeks. Women who are young and/or thin don't usually start to "show" until they're at about 20 weeks (at least that's when I did with my first one).

Also, stress and worry cause delayed menstrual cycles. If you're as young as you claim to be you don't need to be having sex anyway. Maybe this is confirmation that neither of you are acting in a manner that is becomming of your age, your education and your ethics. And assuming that is true from your question, neither of you are probably ready to be married ... so stop playing house! ;o)

can she go to a md or obgyn to have it checked out? because if she isnt pregnant, it could be her worries triggering hormones that would cause the pooch. or it could just be her gaining weight.

but it is possible to not find out about a pregnancy until that late. i dont know about the tests. the home ones are pretty accurate. if the hormone is there, then it shows. i didnt find out i was pregnant until i was 5 months along, but i wasnt having any signs whatsoever, so i never took a test until then.

if shes taken tests and gone to pp, then she shouldnt be pregnant. their tests are as accurate as they can get.

she might not show a weight gain or loss, but if she has stopped exercising or something like that, her middle might be getting a little doughy.

this one is a stumper!

Stress could give her a pooch, or she could be excecising less or eating junkier foods. If it's been 22 weeks and she's still not showing up pregnant on any test, then she's not. If she really was 22 weeks pregnant, she probably would be showing more than just a little pooch. Chances are she's stressed, or bloated, or being less healthy about her food and fitness choices.

I once saw a documentary on this women who thought she was pregnant and wanted to be so badly that her body responded to that and her belly grew, her boobs grew, everything happened to her that would happen to pregnant women, but in ultrasound there was no baby and no sign of ever having been.. They say you can "trick" your mind into thinking your pregnant..It's probably just a psychological thing.. Don't worry. If she were pregnant..She would know it..and prego test wouldnt STILL be coming up negative

How old are you? You write like a 2nd year law student.....

Anyway, weight gain in the abdomen can be caused by so many reasons, but if she's been to pp and taken these tests, i wouldn't be worried....why doesn't she see an MD? That would probably tell her something....more, actually, then we could.

I don't know.....maybe her being so stressed about being pregnant is causing her to produce more Cortisol, causing her to gain weight........!
