Suppose we have two cell phones, of the same make and same brand. We are within a distance of each other, equivalent to being inside the same cell, but we are far outside a cell network.

Are the transmitters in the phones strong enough to reach each other without the cell tower's repeater/amplifier?

Can they even find each other, without the cell tower's repeater/ amplfier?

Is there something critical within the cell network that decrypts their transmissions for each other?

It will not work. It needs the central office to retransmit on the right frequency. Send and receive are not the same on a cell phone. There also has to be a way to convert the phone number to the internal code of the phone or how would the phones connect? This is done by the central computer.

For short distance just buy the small CB radios. They can be used free but you are sharing a limited number of frequencies.

To tell you the truth it is annoying sometimes. I can live without it if all do not have it too. In this case I will not miss it. The problem is that people assume that they can reach me when they like. If I am out of reach they panic and worry. Am I supposed to be available 24/7? These modern inventions have a side effect, they create and cause tension.

No, no, no and yes. If you want short range, buy paired radios, otherwise the only other way is to get a satelite phone.
