The one with all of the "facts" (P.E. or Biology Teacher), a counselor, or another teacher who gets along best with the students?

We had this debate at my Jr Hi (I wasn't in the runnng on any count). The Science Dept all voted for one of their own, but I disagreed. What is your feeling?

Also, my feeling is that anyone who takes six weeks or more on the subject is "dwelling". What is it about sex ed that should take that long?

I agree, 6 weeks is too long. I think a counselor would probably be the best choice for the job. No one wants to be taught about sex organs from their regular teacher. There's also a lot more to it than just knowing the facts. You have to be prepared to answer some really personal and sometimes colorful questions from students. A counselor seems like the most appropriate person to handle answering questions without getting upset or flustered. I remember innocently asking my sex ed teacher what "giving head" meant in 6th grade. We were all horrified to know the answer at the time. I can't imagine any of my teachers being comfortable answering that, but the counselor who came in specifically to teach sex ed had no trouble giving me a direct and honest answer.

They talk about it in health class, but I think they should start having a mandatory class just about STD's and sex! It should be taught in about 7th or 8th grade because kids are having sex at a younger age more often now. There are so many 13 year old girls where I live that are having sex with a lot of guys and most of them are way older than them. The way people are nowadays makes me sad. Teenage pregnancy is rising as well as contracting an STD!

I think the counselor. They deal with "sticky" (no pun intended) issues every day. They could handle this. Also, I agree, 6 weeks is too long.
