I've heard our tank destroyer philosophy in WW2 was flawed and often misused; yet there appears to be no real statistics on their effectiveness. Is there any real information out there that shows their performance compared to the Sherman or even towed anti-tank units?

The anecdotal information I've heard is that tank-destroyers such as the M-10 & M-36 were far more effective against the German tanks than the Sherman tank.

Sadly, when we started the war, the US tanks were under-armoured and under-gunned... the LEE was a joke, and the Sherman not much better. BUT our advantage was the ability to produce them by the THOUSANDS and keep them crewed. AND the ability to make rather rapid modifications to the Sherman... both in construction and in the field

The Sherman tank was a joke compared to Germany's tanks. The armor on the German tanks was many times thicker than the armor on our tanks. The cannon on the Sherman tank was as large as on the German tanks, but they lacked the velocity that was needed to destroy the German tanks. Our bazookas were effectiver however. The German tanks were destroyed by our air attacks. Also we could manufacture them in much greater numbers than they could. Montgomery beat Rommel in N. Africa because the British Navy was able to keep supplying him with American tanks and their spare parts. But most of the new German tanks went to fight on the Russian front. It was only in the closing days of the war that we came out with a tank that could match theirs.

I would like to offer you solid answers regarding this question but I can not. One reason being, the government lies and covers up their flaws, mistakes and corruption. The other reason, being a child of a WWII vet., they do not talk about the war. Any other War vet's will share their experience and knowledge except for the vet's from WWII. My Father, (84 years wise) still fights that war to this day but he fights it silently. I have seen the tragedy, death and waste in his eyes and watched him wrestle to survive in his sleep. My most sincere admiration, love and appreciation to all our Veterans. We are not an ungrateful nation! If there is one thing I could wish it would be peace of mind to each and every living thing upon this Earth.
