The Iran-Iraq war lasted eight years, from 1980-1988.
Saddam launched the invasion after prodding and promised support from the Ronnie Raygun government in the Whorehouse. They wanted him to serve as their proxy army in petty revenge for overthrowing the US-friendy, brutal and corrupt regime of the Shah.
The US supplied Iraq with chemical and biological weapons to help kill more Iranians. In 1983, it was Dumb Donald Rumsfelch who personally went to Iraq to help sell and supply more weapons.
