Wow, does this sound like a stupid question, but I need to know.

I have checked volume etc, but I would think this computer which is only a year old would have an inbuilt microphone,

computer doesnot have a microphone it should be with the user. if there is a microphone u must install software for it for u want a office cd. and then a pop up menu will occur when u turn on or off. if it has a software then speech icon occurs in the control panel . by that u confirm that the software an hardware are ok.

Goto "Control Panel"
Then choose "Sounds and Audio Devices"
Choose tab "Audio"
Goto "Sound Recording" and click on "Volume"
Then modify the volume of your microphone

double click the speaker icon on a pc and there should be a volume line. if you are on a laptop, there should be a pinhole somephere near the top of the screen
if not you can get a mic and plug into the back of your comp, or side of laptop

click start, control panel, add hardware and umm make sure you have the microphone plugged in
